I love trying new things, especially during trips, because then I memorise everything for longer. Therefore I was very excited about eating something typical for icelandic cuisine during my stay in Iceland last week (find more about Icelandic trip here).
Our journey had started in supermarket where after long walk along freezers and coolers some very kind Icelander helped us haunt whale and moreover told us how to prepare it. He recommended to make it rare, but we did it much better 🙂
Whale meat can be replaced by beef – it has similar texture
1.Beat the meat with a meat mallet.
2.Season both sides with thyme, salt and pepper (you can leave seasoned steaks in the fridge immersed in milk over night).
3.Fry on butter or oil (I fried 1,5 min each side).
4.Brown onion on frying pan.
5.Then put steaks to the pot, pour water (either just water or water with wine or only wine), add allspice and bay leaves.
6.Stew as long as it become soft enough (if you like rare meat it can last (add or take) 15 minutes, whereas if you prefer well-done and soft it can even take 1 hour- it depends on thickness of steaks).
